Montessori classification boards are a hands-on material designed to help children develop vocabulary, refine categorization skills, and deepen their understanding of the world around them. Each board features 5 distinct categories—for example, community helpers—along with a set of 25 picture cards (5 per category). Children are invited to match each object or tool to the corresponding category. For advanced students, instead of pictures, they can read the words in cursive or print and match them to the corresponding category.
Lay out the board with the 5 categories visible and name each one clearly.
Present the picture cards in a pile or small tray. (Or word cards in cursive or print for older students)
Take one card at a time, name the object, and think aloud: “Hmm, who might use this stethoscope? I think it belongs with the doctor.”
Encourage the child to continue matching the remaining cards.
Once all cards are matched, review them together, reinforcing vocabulary and connections.
These boards can be used individually, in pairs, or as part of small group discussions. They are ideal for developing logical thinking, oral language, and cultural awareness in a Montessori-inspired environment.
